In the waters around Savudrija, a massive sea battle occurred in 1177 between the Venetians and a fleet led by Emperor Barbarossa’s son, Otho. According to legend, after his defeat, Otho tried to escape and hide in a cistern. The name “Savudrija” is derived from “Salvo re,” meaning “saved king.”
