Guide Through the Fjord: Get to Know the Lim Channel Lim Fjord in Istria

Ah, the Lim Channel – where nature, history, and a sprinkle of Viking mystique come together in a way only Istria can offer. Let’s embark on a lighthearted journey through this stunning bay, uncovering hidden stories, delicious seafood, and perhaps a few secrets left behind by a hermit.

From Hermits to Hollywood

Before becoming a saint, St. Romuald of Ravenna led quite the adventurous life—drama, a quarrel, and eventually a retreat to find peace. His search ended in a cave perched at the bottom of the Lim Channel, which he called home. If you're lucky enough to visit this serene spot, you might just imagine Romuald, sipping from a coconut (or maybe not), gazing out at the sparkling blue bay framed by steep hills.

As legend has it, this mystical cave is where Romuald found tranquility after years of conflict. Tucked away 120 meters above sea level, the cave is more than just a shelter. It’s also home to some unusual residents—Myotis myotis bats! So, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike up to Romualdo’s cave and join the bats for some quiet reflection... or maybe just take in the view of the longest Istrian bay.

A Fjord? Not Exactly...

Though locals fondly call it a fjord, the Lim Channel is technically a submerged karst canyon. But let's not get too picky—whether fjord or canyon, it’s breathtaking. This channel, stretching 12 kilometers, used to be a lush valley cut by the Pazinčica River. Over time, Mother Nature (as she often does) decided to shake things up, and the sea took over.

Oh, and did you know that Vikings were once here? No, not the real ones—but close enough! The legendary Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis filmed scenes for The Vikings right in this very spot. So, if you visit, you might catch yourself scanning the horizon for a longship or two (no promises, though).

The Lim Channel is famed for its oyster and fish farms, and if you're visiting, you cannot skip Tony’s Oyster Shack.

The Best Oysters You’ll Ever Have

But enough with the history lessons. Let’s talk about food! The Lim Channel is famed for its oyster and fish farms, and if you're visiting, you cannot skip Tony’s Oyster Shack. Picture this: a charming little shack perched on stilts over the azure waters, fresh oysters being plucked straight from the sea. Tony’s—or rather Emil's—Oyster Shack is the stuff of culinary dreams.

Emil, the man behind the magic, greets you with a shucking knife in hand, ready to guide you through the oyster experience of a lifetime. These aren’t just any oysters—they’re plump, salty, and absolutely divine. Emil will tell you that the trick is in their simplicity. No fancy sauces, just a touch of lemon and a taste of the sea. Oh, and while you're there, you might want to try the sea truffles too—dense, flavorful mussels that complement the oysters beautifully. Trust me, this is one dining experience you won’t forget anytime soon. Be sure to bring cash (Emil's old school like that), and don’t forget to send him an email if you’re visiting outside of the summer rush.
